SILCOR® Primer PU 30

Single component, solvent free polyurethane primer for use with SILCOR® liquid waterproof membranes applied to bitumen sheets.

Product Description

SILCOR® Primer PU 30 is a single component polyurethane primer, formulated specifically to optimise performance of Silcor liquid waterproof membranes applied to bitumen sheets.

Principal Applications

Primer for existing bitumen sheet roofs, prior to the application of Silcor elastomeric waterproof membranes.

System Components

1. Surface preparation

Only use Silcor Primer PU 30 on bitumen substrates. For concrete substrates, use Silcor Primer EPF.

All surfaces must be dry, clean, sound, free of dust, grease and any other contaminants that might affect adhesion.

Bitumen felts should be checked carefully. If the surface defects (cracks, blisters, poorly bonded laps, etc.) are less than 15% of the total surface area then it is feasible to apply Silcor Primer PU 30. All blisters in the bitumen sheets should be star cut and the substrate beneath dried fully with a vac and hot air gun. All cut edges and debonded laps should be re-bonded with Adcor® Adhesive MS. Remove all un-bonded mineral stones.

Where bitumen sheet roofs have surface defects in excess of 15% of the total surface area, it is not feasible to apply Silcor Primer PU 30. Remove all bitumen sheets and residues from the substrate to expose the structural deck. Use Silcor Primer EPF on all concrete substrates where bitumen sheets have been removed.

The substrate humidity before application of the primer must be less than 5%. The primer surface humidity before application of Silcor liquid membrane must be less than 5%.

2. Mixing

Mix with a slow speed paddle mixer (less than 300 rpm) for 3 minutes in order to obtain an homogenous mixture.

3. Application

Application temperature range 5°C to 30°C. Apply Silcor Primer PU 30 to the surface by brush or roller, ensuring coverage of the entire surface. Silcor Primer PU 30 should be applied at a typical consumption rate of 0.2-0.3 kg/m2.

Product Advantages

  • Solvent free - does not soften bitumen.
  • Elastic - complements Silcor liquid waterproofmembranes.
  • Low viscosity - easy application.
  • Heat and frost resistant.

Coverage rates will vary depending on surface irregularity. The primer should be applied to give full substrate coverage but should be applied as thinly as possible to prevent ponding. Do not allow primer to pond, to avoid risk of bubbling.

Apply Silcor liquid waterproofing within 24-48 hours of primer application. Do not scatter sand on Silcor Primer PU 30. If application of Silcor liquid waterproofing to the primer is delayed beyond this time, re-prime with a second coat of Silcor Primer PU 30.

4. Curing

Allow the primer to cure typically for 24-48 hours.
