MORTARD® 79/5

Mortar Retarder

Product Description

MORTARD® 79/5 is a liquid mortar retarder, designed for use in ready-mixed mortar. It has been specifically developed for cement / lime / sand mortars but is equally effective in cement / sand only mortars.

MORTARD® 79/5 is formulated from carefully selected raw materials and is manufactured under controlled conditions to give a consistent product complying with EN 934-3

Advantages

  • Enables controlled set retardation of mortars to be achieved.
  • Retardation can be produced up to a period of 1–3 days, if required.
  • Production of ready mixed mortar can be manufactured and delivered to sites for use at their convenience.

    Method Of Use

MORTARD® 79/5 is supplied ready for use. It should be added to the mortar mix during the mixing process at the same time as the water or fine aggregate, but not directly onto cement. No extension of normal mortar mixing time is necessary. The amount of MORTARD® 79/5 required is dependent on the characteristics of the mortar constituents and the level of air entrainment required. Factors which affect this are:

    • Type and efficiency of the mixing equipment
    • Water content
    • Fine aggregate content, grading and type
    • Cement/lime content and type
    • Temperature

    Compatibility with Cements

MORTARD® 79/5 can be used with most types of Portland cements. It is also effective in mortar containing fly ash or ground granulated blastfurnace slag. For use with special cements we recommend contacting GCP Applied Technologies.

    Compatibility with other Admixtures

MORTARD® 79/5 should not be premixed with other admixtures.

The performance of the product will be affected by the presence of other chemical admixtures. We recommend that all admixtures be added separately into the mix. It is essential that preliminary plant trials are performed so that
the actual dosage rates can be determined, taking into account the contributing factors stated.

    Effects of Overdosing

The effect of overdosing MORTARD® 79/5 is a function of the degree of overdose. Severe overdosing with MORTARD® 79/5 will result in excess retardation, which will manifest in prolonged “greenness” and slow development of the intrinsic strength of the mortar. The bonding of the mortar to the brick/blockwork may be adversely affected as the mortar may become desiccated prior to its set.

    Addition Rates

Range 1000 ml - 3000 ml per 100 kg cement
1.00%-3.00% (v/w) by wt. of cement
As a guide to trials an addition rate of 1.0-2.0% volume by weight of cement is suggested.
For advice and assistance with trials we recommend that you consult GCP Applied Technologies.

    Dispensing

It is preferable that MORTARD® 79/5 should be introduced into the mixer by automatic dispensing equipment. Equipment or advice on dispensing can be obtained from GCP.

    Health and Safety

For further information on Health and Safety matters regarding this product we recommend that you consult the relevant Material Safety Data Sheet from GCP. In line with general chemical handling precautions avoid contact with skin or eyes and protective gloves/goggles should be worn.

    Packaging and Storage

MORTARD® 79/5 is supplied in 15 or 205 non returnable drums and 1,000 litre totes. Alternatively, bulk deliveries can be arranged. MORTARD® 79/5 should be stored in a cool, dry place protected from rain, extremes of temperature and sources of ignition.

    Storage Life in Manufacturer‘s Bags:
12 months from date of manufacture.
