METASET® FLEX SEALANT
Quick Setting Joint Fillers
Product Description
METASET® Flex Sealants are cold applied, fast curing, gap fillers based on Stirling Lloyd’s, now GCP Applied Technologies, unique ESSELAC® advanced resin technology and extensive experience in the development of high performance sealants, that have been designed for sealing joints and gaps where low movement is likely to occur.
There are two viscosity grades: METASET® Flex Sealant 1 and METASET® Flex Sealant 2.
Product Uses
METASET® Flex Sealant 1 is a free flowing, self-levelling grade for horizontal and captive joint applications. METASET® Flex Sealant 2 is a slump-resistant grade for vertical applications.
Product Features
- Fast curing, even at sub-zero temperatures
- Fully reactive and solvent free
- Low temperature flexibility with a high elongation at break
- Excellent UV, ageing and weather resistance

Surface Preparation
It should be stressed that the success of any jointing system is dependent on the thoroughness of the surface preparation.
Concrete
New concrete substrates should be a minimum of seven days old. The substrate must be clean, dry and structurally sound. It must be free from laitance, oils and all other surface contaminants.
1For temperatures outside this application range please contact our Customer Services Department Oil and grease can be removed by scouring using a water-soluble degreaser.
Repairs to damaged concrete arises can be made using our METASET® ResiFilla rapid curing levelling and repair compounds.
Steel
On steel surfaces all rust, dirt and contamination should be removed to expose bright metal to achieve a surface finish to comply with Swedish standard Sa 2.5. For compatibility with other construction materials or where additives, cement replacement or curing compounds have been used please consult our Customer Services Department.
Application
Primer
Concrete substrates must be primed using either PAR1 or PA1 primer. Steel substrates must be primed with ZED S94 primer immediately after blast cleaning.
The relevant primer must be allowed to cure before application of the METASET® Flex Sealant takes place. It is very important to ensure that the primer is applied as far down into the expansion gap as possible, on both sides. Please refer to the relevant datasheet for further information.
METASET® Flex Sealant
Consists of a liquid resin and a powder catalyst (BPO) all supplied in pre-weighed quantities ready for on-site mixing.
The contents of the kit should be stirred thoroughly using a mechanical stirrer, such as an air-driven drill (400-800rpm) and paddle, just prior to use.
Immediately prior to use add the correct amount of BPO to the stirred contents of the kit and mix thoroughly using a mechanical stirrer until all the BPO has dispersed. Scrape round the sides and base of the drum to ensure thorough mixing. The lower the temperature the longer dispersion takes, but is typically one to two minutes. Once the BPO is added this initiates the ‘working life’ of the material, during which time it should be applied.
To minimise material usage, the joint gap should be plugged using our PL800 Cord or other suitable product to support the METASET® Flex Sealant. The PL800 Cord should be recessed approximately 20mm below the surface of the substrate but no more than 30mm. The gap between the nosings should then be filled with METASET® Flex Sealant.
METASET® Flex Sealant 1 should be poured onto horizontal surfaces and then smoothed out using a trowel.
METASET® Flex Sealant 2 should be applied using a trowel onto vertical surfaces.
METASET® Flex Sealant will remain tacky on the surface when applied into a deep recess. If contamination is an issue then a second application of METASET® Flex Sealant at a thickness of between 1 to 2mm over the top will ensure the surface is dry to the touch. This should be applied immediately after the first application has cure. Please contact us for further information.
Thickness of METASET® Flex Sealant 22
If required, METASET® Flex Sealant 2 can be thickened to suit the needs of the application e.g. on a large, poorly supported detail.
The METASET® Flex Sealant 2 is thickened by adding small quantities of water to the resin prior to the addition of the BPO Powder Catalyst.
The minimum addition of water should be used to achieve the desired thickness. This can be determined by testing the resin with the increasing water addition on the detail. The amount of water required will vary depending on site conditions, including temperature and surface texture.
Water may be added up to a maximum of 0.75%. For a kilogram of METASET® Flex Sealant 2 this represents 7.5g which is equivalent to 1½ teaspoons of water. It is recommended that the water is added in 2.5g increments (1/2 teaspoon) until the desired consistency is obtained.
Do not exceed 7.5g (3 x ½ teaspoons) or the cure of the product will be impeded.
Coverage
- Primer refer to separate datasheet
- METASET® Flex Sealant 1 1.1kg/m²/mm
- METASET® Flex Sealant 2 1.1kg/m²/mm
Colour & Grades
METASET® Flex Sealant is pigmented Dark Grey as standard. The material can be supplied in a range of other colours subject to minimum order quantities and price confirmation. It is supplied in both Standard and Tropical grades. The Tropical grade is for use at temperatures in excess of 30°C.
Cleaning
All tools and equipment should be cleaned with acetone before the material is allowed to cure.
Packaging & Storage
METASET® Flex Sealant is supplied in a 5kg kit, consisting of 4.85kg of resin and 150grams of BPO catalyst.
METASET® Flex Sealant should be stored in cool, dry, protected conditions, out of direct sunlight and in accordance with the relevant site Health & Safety regulations. Storage temperature must not exceed 25°C. Do not store near naked flames or foodstuffs.
Stored in unopened containers, under the correct conditions, the components have a minimum shelf life of twelve months. If your product is more than twelve months old you must contact GCP before use.
