MORTAIR®

Mortar Air-Entraining Agent

Product Description

MORTAIR® is a liquid air-entraining agent for use in the production of air entrained mortar. It is normally used in conjunction with MORTARD® 79/5 Mortar Retarder (see separate data sheet). MORTAIR® is formulated to allow ease of production of ready-to-use mortars complying with EN 998. MORTAIR® yields a constant air content over a wide range of dosages. MORTAIR® gives an extremely stable air system and complies with EN 934-3.

Advantages

  • MORTAIR® produces a stable air system with minimum air loss throughout the life of the plastic mortar
  • Production of ready-to-use mortars complying with EN 998 is made easier because of the plateauing of air content and constant air content over a wide range of dosage
  • Due to its dosage tolerance, the levels of entrained air when using MORTAIR® are less susceptible to variation in fine aggregate grading and silt content of the fine aggregate
  • Mortar containing MORTAIR® has very good site acceptance because of its constant air content, reduced bleeding and predictable workability and life

Typical Properties

MORTAIR®
Appearance Dark brown liquid
Specific Gravity (20°C) 1.038
Alkali Content (eq.Na20) 0.60%
Chloride Content Nil
Air Entrainment See “Addition Rates”
Freezing Point -3°C

Method Of Use

MORTAIR® is supplied ready for use.

It should be added to the mortar mixes during the mixing process at the same time as the water or fine aggregate, but not directly onto cement. With good plant control, very consistent results can be obtained.

The amount of MORTAIR® required is dependent on the characteristics of the mortar constituents and the level of air entrainment required. Factors which affect this are:

  • Type and efficiency of the mixing equipment
  • Water content
  • Fine aggregate content, grading and type
  • Cement/lime content and type
  • Temperature

Compatibility

With Cements :

MORTAIR® can be used with most types of Portland cements. It is also effective in mortar containing fly ash or ground granulated blastfurnace slag. For use with special cements we recommend contacting GCP Applied Technologies.

With Other Admixtures:

MORTAIR® should not be premixed with other admixtures. The performance of the product will be affected by the presence of other chemical admixtures. We recommend that all admixtures be added separately into the mix.

Addition Rates

Range 300 ml - 800 ml per 100 kg cement
0.30% - 0.80% (v/w) by wt. of cement
As a guide to trials an addition rate of 0.40 - 0.60% volume by weight of cement is suggested.
For advice and assistance with trials we recommend that you consult GCP Applied Technologies.

It is essential that preliminary plant trials are performed so that the actual dosage rates can be determined, taking into account the contributing factors stated (where MORTAIR® is used in mortar containing fly-ash, the dosage rate may typically be twice the range quoted above).

Effects of Overdosing

The effect of overdosing MORTAIR®  is a function of the degree of overdose.

Overdosing with MORTAIR® will result in a modest increase in air content and workability

Dispensing

It is preferable that MORTAIR® should be introduced into the mixer by automatic dispensing equipment. Equipment or advice on dispensing can be obtained from GCP Applied Technologies.

Health and Safety

For further information on Health and Safety matters regarding this product we recommend that you consult the relevant Safety Data Sheet from GCP Applied Technologies. In line with general chemical handling precautions avoid contact with skin or eyes and protective gloves/goggles should be worn.

Packaging

MORTAIR® is supplied in both 15 or 205 non returnable drums and 1,000 litre totes. Alternatively, bulk deliveries can be arranged.

Storage

MORTAIR® should be stored above 0 ⁰C and protected from frost. If the product does freeze, it should be thawed out slowly and remixed mechanically prior to use.
