DBM® W

Plasticiser for Semi-Dry Mixes

Product Description

DBM® W is a liquid permeability reducing admixture for use in all types of mortar and concrete mixes. DBM W has particular applications in the cast stone and block making industries, where high aggregate/ cement ratios are normally used.

Typical Properties

DBM W
Appearance amber coloured liquid
Specific Gravity 1.04 at 20 °C
Sulphate Content 0.50% as SO3
Chloride Content Nil
Freezing Point -5 °C

Advantages

  •  DBM W can be added by means of an automatic disperser.
  •  It can be used with grey or white Portland cement or with pigmented mixes to help prevent unsightly efflorescence and irregular leaching out of pigments.
  •  Precast units, blocks, bricks and other semi-dry concretes containing this type of permeability reducer, retain their original clean appearance when exposed to the elements for considerable periods.
  • The durability of concrete finishes is increase because the penetration of rain and moisture is greatly reduced, giving improved resistance to frost damage.
  •  Aggregate mottling can be prevented in most mixes.
  • The reduction in permeability obtained with DBM W is long lasting.

Method of Use

DBM W is supplied ready for use. It should be added to concrete mixes during the mixing process at the same time as the water or the aggregates. It should not be added directly to the cement. No extension of normal mixing time is necessary.

Compatibility with Cements

DBM W can be used with all types of Portland cement including sulphate resisting and cement replacement materials.

Compatibility with other Admixtures

DBM W should not be premixed under any circumstances with other admixtures. While some admixtures can be usefully combined within the same mix the performance of this product may well be affected by the presence of other chemicals and we recommend that GCP Applied Technologies be contacted for advice in all such circumstances.

Addition Rates

Range: 1.0%–2.0% volume by weight of cement

The performance of DBM W is best assessed after preliminary tests on site using the actual mix under consideration. It has been found to be effective in a wide range of concretes, e.g. in open textured blocks containing grey or white cement, various mixes into which a synthetic colour is added and in concrete of normal density.

It is difficult to specify a precise level of addition for optimum results to be achieved because of the range of applications. Furthermore, the degree of reduction in surface permeability required can be achieved by varying the dosage level, which typically lies between 1000 ml–2000 ml DBM W per 100 kg cement.

Effects of Overdosing

Serious overdosing of DBM W will generally produce an increase in workability and cohesion of the mix. In cold weather this may be accompanied by retardation of setting.

Dispensing

It is preferable that liquid admixtures for concrete should be introduced into the mixer by means of automatic dispensing equipment. Details are available upon request.
