Product Description
DAREX® AE5 is a liquid air-entraining admixture with plasticising properties used to entrain a controlled volume of air into a concrete mixture, while permitting a considerable reduction in the free water content.
DAREX® AE5 conforms to EN 934-2. The air-entraining properties enable it to entrain into concrete controlled quantities of air bubbles of the optimum spacing and diameter to give durability under freeze/thaw conditions.
Advantages
- Enables entrainment of specified levels of air into concrete mixtures
- Gives increased workability enabling a reduction in the water content on the order of 15% - 20%
- Confers all the advantages of air entrainment: less susceptibility to bleeding & segregation, increased durability, and reduced permeability
- Has moderate set-retarding properties, that can be of advantage where high cement content, high temperature or excess heat evolution are involved
- At the recommended dosage the effect on setting time is slight and will not normally affect stripping times of formwork
- After initial retardation of set, rapid hardening of the concrete takes place, normally overtaking control concrete within a few hours

Method Of Use
DAREX® AE5 is supplied ready for use.
It should be added to the concrete mixture during the mixing process with the water. It should not be added directly to the cement. No extension of normal mixing time is necessary. The performance of DAREX® AE5 is best assessed after preliminary trials both in the laboratory and on site. The percentage of air entrained is dependent upon the concrete workability. Aggregate type is important in selecting a suitable dosage.
Compatibility
With Cements :
DAREX® AE5 can be used with most types of Portland cements. It is also effective in concrete containing fly ash or ground granulated blastfurnace slag. For use with special cements we recommend that you consult GCP Applied Technologies.
With Other Admixtures:
DAREX® AE5 should not under any circumstances be premixed with other admixtures. The performance of the product will be affected by the presence of other chemical admixtures. We recommend that all admixtures be added separately into the mix
Addition Rates
Range |
240 ml - 500 ml per 100 kg cement |
0.24% -0.50% (v/w) by wt. of cement |
As a guide to trials an addition rate of 0.12-0.28% volume by weight of cement is suggested. |

Effects of Overdosing
The effect of overdosing DAREX® AE5 is a function of the degree of overdose. Serious overdosing of DAREX® AE5 will generally produce a considerable increase in workability, an increase in air content, and retardation of setting time. In cold weather, this retardation will be further increased. In such cases however, provided the concrete is properly cured, the ultimate strength will not be seriously reduced.
Dispensing
It is preferable that DAREX® AE5 should be introduced into the mixer by automatic dispensing equipment. Equipment or advice on dispensing can be obtained from GCP Applied Technologies.
Health and Safety
For further information on Health and Safety matters regarding this product we recommend that you consult the relevant Material Safety Data Sheet from GCP. In line with general chemical handling precautions avoid contact with skin or eyes and protective gloves/goggles should be worn.
Packaging & Storage
DAREX® AE5 is supplied in both 15 or 205 non returnable drums and 1,000 litre totes. Alternatively, bulk deliveries can be arranged. DAREX® AE5 should be stored away from extremes of temperature and then protected from frost. The product should be kept out of direct sunlight in shaded storage at all times.
